There are many reasons, but the main one is lifestyle: because so many people spend a significant amount of time sitting (computers, desks and cars are the main culprits), piriformis syndrome is on the increase. Google this term.
As well, for the GB (Gymnastic Bodies) seminar group, piriformis is one of the main reasons people cannot do the pike. As well, and more generally, tight hamstrings are often the result of tight piriformis (and can be related to tight gastrocnemius, too).
